The Project - Research and publications
India centric ophthalmic research both in clinical sciences and basic sciences related ophthalmology are conducted both by Medical Research Foundation and Vision Research Foundation. More that 406 numbers of scientific papers have been published so far in peer reviewed journals. Alcon Laboratory Limited, Allergan, Bausch & Lomb, and Chennai Willingdon Hospital Corporation trust are some of the agencies, which have recognized and funded research programs at the Medical Research Foundation and Vision Research Foundation. Almost one-third of the research publications on Ophthalmology published from India in peer-reviewed journals are from Sankara Nethralaya. Recognizing our research talents and potential, an ARVO Indo US team visited Sankara Nethralaya on 15th Feb 2004 for forging collaboration.
Sankara Nethrelaya has many publications to its name. To celebrate the 20th year of founding of Vision Research Foundation a monograph titled "Towards Excellence" was published. For disseminating knowledge to the ophthalmic community "Insight" and to the lay public "Eyelights" are published periodically. Five very important books, for sharing and propagating knowledge and expertise with fellow ophthalmologists have been published. They are "Clinical Practice Pattern in Ophthalmology", "Sankara Nethralaya ATlas of Uveitis and Scleritis", "An Atlas of Neuro-Ophthamology:, "Sankara Nethralaya Atlas of Fundus Flourescein Angiography" and " A Monograph on AIDS" all authored by the consultants of Sankara Nethralaya.

The configuration of the new Research Center would comprise 4 components.

The research components of the configuration comprise basic research and collaborative research, the education components would be spearheaded by the e-learning initiative and tele-ophthalmology would substantially enhance the rural outreach initiatives.
